     Herman emigrated at age 27 from Prussia departing in Jul-1845 and arrived in the United States at the Port of New York. When Herman Joseph left Prussia, he brought with him a sword he received from the Prussian Government for services rendered, inscribed "Herman J von Schultheiss".

Herman was a Union soldier during the Civil War. He enlisted on 06 January 1862 as a Hospital Steward in the 1st Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Calvary.
