From his memorial card: John was raised in Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota. In 1937 he made his home at Germantown, Iowa where he owned and operated a service station and Bulk Plant. He then owned and operated a restaurant in Rock Rapids. John served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater where he witnessed the Japanese surrender. Following his discharge, he returned home, and in 1947 opened Odenbrett Motor Company. He was united in marriage to Rosalie Gallo. The couple made their home in Dakota City, where they owned and operated Odenbrett Oil Company. Mrs. Odenbrett passed away in 1994 and John continued to remain active in his business, Odenbrett Bait Shop , with his son John Jr., until becoming a resident of Humboldt Care Center North in November of 2001. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
