From the Heart:

What is family? The answer will be different if you ask your twelve year old son or your sixty year old mother. To your son it will be his brothers and sisters, his parents, his grandparents, maybe his uncles and aunts and their children. This is who he sees at reunions, weddings, and funerals. Your mother on the other hand will see her children and grandchildren and as she grows yet older, her parent and siblings will come into focus as her mind reverts back to the fond memories of her childhood. Memory plays a big part when it comes to "who is family." We relate family to good times, happy times - the festivities of the occasions. The times which caused a smile on our face and a goodness in our heart. Let this always be so.

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas.

May the Lord look upon us and smile as we are his family.

In God's love, Donald

Genealogy

You may have noticed with last year's newsletter, I began in earnest to collect family photographs, both portrait as well as family group. I will not attempt to send a letter to every family and request they share these photographs. I can only suggest if you have not done so, you might consider the impact of not sharing. Remember, this is how you, the person, may be remembered by your great-grandchildren in the years to come.

The timing of this is important as I am in the process of creating the Ott, the Siegl and multiple Schulteis family heritage books. If I do not have the pictures, these books will not contain them. And, your great-grandchildren may not have your image to cherish

On the Web's Omnibus Portal you will find our "deceased" ancestors identified. Here you will also see for whom I have a picture and for whom I do not.

Keep me in mind when you change your email providers or postal address as this will assist me in getting the newsletter announcement to you. Check here for the 25 families for who I presently need an updated email address. You need to help them as they will not be seeing this.

If you should distribute a family newsletter, would appreciate if you might send me a copy as it would help to keep me up-to-date.

The Omnibus Web Site's home is located at www.schulteis.com/omnibus/index.htm
Thanks to Donovan James Schulteis for hosting it.

Happenings: This year I have bit the bullet and began a managed effort to bring the information recorded on the Schulteis family current. I don't treat this lightly as it will be a rather large effort. Am dividing the family into branches and contacting one person, senior member, in each branch to coordinate the gathering of information and pictures for that branch. What will be helpful is the use of a report which identifies what information is desired and where pictures would be useful. This activity was started in August with the children of Herman and Gertrude. The activity will be expanded until all branches have been addressed.

Am also researching the Wiedmeyer branch of the family for the first time.

Siegl Family

The earliest known picture of the Siegl Homestead house in Vollmau, Bohemia. Picture taken possibly in the 1870-1880s. Shared with us by Marianne (Siegl) Weihermann of D-74523 Schwäbisch Hall, Germany.

Deaths:

Bernard George Siegel on 12 April 2006 in Neenah, Winnebago County, Wisconsin, USA. Bernard was the son of the late George John Siegel and the late Emma Marie Lutz and the spouse of Marion Dieschl. He was 79 years.

Happenings: In the spring of 2006, Norbert and Brigitte Siegl of Schwandorf, Bavaria, Germany visited the Siegl family homestead in Vollmau, Bohemia (Folmava, Czech Republic). They report there is no longer any vestige of the Siegl family having been there. The building's foundation and surrounding fruit and nut trees had been removed by a bulldozer several weeks before they arrived. The house had been removed several decades back and the barn shortly after the expulsion in 1945. Am hoping those who had been there, before 1945, or their descendants who may have second hand knowledge will document their remembrances and pass along these remembrance of the grounds, buildings, the families as well as passed down family stories. We can only hope this cherished information does not become lost.

In June of 2006 I had planned on publishing the Siegl Family Heritage Book. It is now December and I am still planing on doing so. We are getting close. Pictures have been forthcoming and two of the family branches are in the final throws of updating their information. Much has happened in expanding the family during the last year. The challenge for me had been to determine how the Kachelmeier family of Slinger was related to our Siegl family. Grandfather, Joseph John Siegl, had sent many letters to this family. Frances (Halamka) Kachelmeier signed the burial register of Grandmother Anna. Additionally, the Kachelmeier family identified the Kachelmeyers of Milwaukee were their cousins but the connection was not known to them. An aside, two of Grandfather's sisters married Kachelm... gentlemen. The challenge for me has been for the last six years to tie all these families together.

Am happy to report the Kachelmeier family of Slinger is related to the Kachelmeyer family of Milwaukee/California and both families are related to our Siegl family. The binding family is Johann Kachelmayer and Anna Maria Siegl of Hasselbach, Bohemia. Anna Maria was the daughter of Joachim Bernhard Siegl and Julianna Semmelbauer of Vollmau, Bohemia.

Anna and Johann had seven children. One son, Franz Kachelmaier, married Magdalena Fellner and their offspring are the Kachelmeier family of Slinger, the Meingast family of Milwaukee, the Schneider family of Calumet County, Wisconsin and two sons, Karl and Anton married Grandfather Siegl's sisters Maria amd Katharina. Karl, the second son of Anna and Johann married Katherina Aschenberger and their offspring are the Kachelmeyer family of Milwaukee/California.

Have contacted with a Czech Republic genealogical researcher to have him fill out the first four Siegl families (1660-1750). Will hold off publishing until I receive information back. The book should be available shortly after I recieve the information.

As to why the "i" versus the "y," can't come up with a good reason. Seems the migration went from "y" to "i" as some initially used Kachelmayer/Kachelmeyer and died as Kachelmeier. Once the change was made from "mayer/meyer" to "meier," naming of the children followed the change, that is, they were named "meier."
